Hip hop music, commonly known as rap music, is a subgenre of music that originated in the 1970s in the Bronx Section of new York City by inner-city Black Americans and Hispanic Americans. It is just a form of sophisticated rhythmic music that comprises a mixture of rapping and singing, which is a form of rhythmic and rhyming speech repeated. It evolved as a subculture within hip hop, which is distinguished by four distinct aesthetic elements:

Rapping or emcing as it is also called, DJing/scratching using a turntable, break dancing, and graffiti painting. Additionally, rhythms or bass lines from recordings (or synthetic beats and noises) are sampled, as is rhythmic beatboxing. Rap’s distinguishing characteristics include metaphor, braggadocio, repetition, formulaic phrases, double entendre, imitation, rhyme, and “signifying”. Folklorists credit H. “Rap” Brown, a 1960s black nationalist whose praising moniker “rap” implied his dominance of a “hip” manner of speech fittingly dubbed rappin’, for popularising the word.

Although Brown is credited with coining the term “rap,” the genre’s roots may be traced back to deep southern oral traditions such as toasts, blues,  and northern urban street jive, which all incorporate the aforementioned characteristics of Rap. Key facts to remember for our Rap name quiz.

Breath control, or the ability to inhale breath without interfering with one’s performance, is a critical talent for any rapper to learn and a requirement for every MC.
